Hotels and Travel guide in Tibet

Tibet is a travel destination that combines mysterious culture, magnificent nature, and high altitudes (mostly over 3,500-5,000 meters). Choosing a good hotel is therefore crucial for altitude acclimatization, especially hotels with supplemental oxygen systems.

Important information before traveling to Tibet (updated 2026): You must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit through a tour agent in China (foreigners cannot enter freely; they must travel with a guide + private vehicle or group).

The best time to visit is May-October (clear weather, beautiful lakes and grasslands). Winter (November-April) is very cold but less crowded, and some hotels offer promotions.

Most hotels are concentrated in major cities like Lhasa, Shigatse, and Nyingchi. Remote areas like Everest Base Camp and Mount Kailash (Ngari) mainly offer guesthouses or tents.

Recommended popular hotels in Tibet: (2025-2026) Mostly 4-5 star hotels. Lhasa has the most luxurious options as it's the capital and a major starting point.

1. The St. Regis Lhasa Resort (5 stars): Top luxury hotel in Tibet, decorated in a blend of Tibetan and modern styles.

Features a spa, swimming pool, and in-room oxygen therapy.

Stunning views of the Potala Palace.

Price: Approximately 8,000-15,000+ THB/night (depending on the season).

2. Shangri-La Hotel Lhasa (5 stars): Views of the Potala Palace and surrounding mountains.

Features a 24-hour oxygen bar, swimming pool, gym, and various restaurants.

Located west of the city, near Norbulingka Palace.

Price: Approximately 6,000-12,000 THB/night.

3. InterContinental Lhasa Paradise (5 stars): Modern and comfortable, ideal for those who prefer international brands.

Excellent oxygen therapy system.

4. Hilton Linzhi Resort (5 stars): Located in Nyingchi, suitable for those who want to see lakes and forests. (Slightly lower elevation than Lhasa, making acclimatization easier)

The nature is very beautiful in spring (wild cherry blossoms).

5. In Shigatse (on the way to Everest): Hilton Shigatse or Gesar Hotel (4 stars) – good oxygen, convenient location near Tashilhunpo Monastery.

6. Other areas: Everest Base Camp (EBC) → Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse or basic guesthouse (very cold, warm clothing is necessary). Some trips include luxury tent camping.

Mount Kailash / Ngari → Guesthouses in Darchen or Purang (basic, but cleaner now).

This remains a popular trend in 2026, especially for northern and coastal routes. Here are some of the most popular and recommended routes for this time of year, complete with beautiful photos to give you a clearer picture!

1. The Classic Northern Route: Chiang MaiPai → Mae Hong Son (Mae Hong Son Loop) Approximately 600-700 km (round trip) / 3-5 days

Highlights: 1,864 curves, stunning mountain views, pine forests, fog, sea of fog, and hill tribe communities.

2026 Highlight: Excellent weather during November-February. 1. Perfect! There are so many new cafes and homestays popping up along this romantic and beautifully winding northern road.

2. Andaman Coast Drive: For example, Phuket → Krabi → Trang or Ratsada → Ranong

Distance: Approximately 300-500 km / Time: 3-4 days

Highlights: Coastal road, beautiful bay views, quiet beaches, sunset viewing spots. World-class clear seas along the Andaman coast – a truly enjoyable drive, with ocean views all the way.

3. Central-Western Thailand Nature Route: Kanchanaburi → Srinakarin Dam → Uthai Thani. Approximately 350-450 km / 2-4 days.

Highlights: Bridge over the River Kwai, Erawan Waterfall, Tham Krasae Cave, lush green rice fields, beautiful forest temples.

Tips for Driving in Thailand (Updated 2026): Important Traffic Laws: No phone use while driving (fines up to 4,000 baht), absolutely no drunk driving, everyone wears a seatbelt, normal highway speed limit 90-110 km/h, expressway speed limit 100-120 km/h.

Fuel & Costs: Gasoline/diesel approximately 35-42 baht/liter (varying depending on the season), regular cars consume about 12-18 km/liter → Roughly calculated, 1,000 km will cost around 2,000-3,500 baht in fuel.

Expressways: M-Pass/Easy Pass is very convenient and helps reduce cash verification time.

Recommended vehicle: SUV/Pickup/fuel-efficient eco-car. If driving in the north, use low gear and good suspension because there are many steep curves.
