Enjoying drinks and partying on Khao San Road.
Khao San Road is one of Bangkok's most famous tourist areas. Located in the Phra Nakhon district, near Bang Lamphu and the Grand Palace, the road is only about 400 meters long but is full of life, day and night. It has been a gathering place for backpackers from all over the world since the 1980s, earning it the nickname "Backpacker Ghetto." A brief history:
Originally built in 1892 during the reign of King Rama V, it was a rice trading area (the name comes from "rice grains" or polished rice). Later, in the 80s and 90s, it became a source of cheap guesthouses, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues, becoming world-famous, especially after the movie The Beach (2000) was filmed here. Highlights of sightseeing and activities: Daytime: Shopping for clothes, souvenirs, handmade items, jewelry, temporary tattoos, foot massages, or eating street food like Pad Thai, banana roti, mango with sweet fish sauce, and unusual things like fried scorpions or fried insects.
Nighttime: The most vibrant! Bars, pubs, and clubs play loud music, feature live bands, offer opportunities for chilled beer, or party hard until late. The atmosphere is lively with a diverse range of international tourists.
Around the area: Walk to Rambuttri Road (more relaxed atmosphere), Phra Athit Road, or take a ferry to Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho.
Latest Situation (Early 2026)
Based on the latest information from late 2025, Khao San Road remains a major tourist destination, but the New Year's atmosphere was rather subdued due to economic factors and regional tensions, resulting in approximately a 30% decrease in hotel bookings and fewer tourists than usual. However, entertainment venues remained open, and there were still small countdown events. Getting there is very easy: Take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Phra Athit Pier and walk a short distance, or take a taxi/Grab from the airport/city center.Destinations
