เครือรัฐออสเตรเลีย (อังกฤษ: Commonwealth of Australia) เป็นประเทศซึ่งประกอบด้วยแผ่นดินหลักของทวีปออสเตรเลีย เกาะแทสเมเนีย และเกาะอื่นๆในมหาสมุทรอินเดีย แปซิฟิก และมหาสมุทรใต้ ประเทศเพื่อนบ้านของออสเตรเลียประกอบด้วย อินโดนีเซีย ปาปัวนิวกินี และติมอร์ตะวันออกทางเหนือ หมู่เกาะโซโลมอน วานูอาตู และนิวแคลิโดเนียทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และนิวซีแลนด์ทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
ชื่อออสเตรเลีย มาจากคำในภาษาละติน ว่า australis ซึ่งหมายถึงทิศใต้ โดยมีตำนานถึง "ดินแดนทางใต้ที่ไม่รู้จัก" (ละติน: terra australis incognita) ชาวยุโรปเริ่มสำรวจค้นพบออสเตรเลียในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 22 และต่อมาจึงกลายเป็นดินแดนอาณานิคมของบริเตน โดยเริ่มต้นเป็นอาณานิคมนักโทษในนิวเซาท์เวลส์ และจึงมีการตั้งอาณานิคมขึ้นอีกห้าแห่ง อาณานิคมทั้งหกรวมตัวเป็นสหพันธรัฐในปีพ.ศ. 2444 ออสเตรเลียมีชนพื้นเมืองซึ่งอาศัยตั้งแต่ก่อนชาวยุโรปเข้ามา เรียกว่าชาวอะบอริจิน
The Commonwealth of Australia is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous islands in the Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans.Australia's neighboring countries include Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia to the northeast; and New Zealand to the southeast.The name Australia comes from the Latin word australis, meaning south, referring to a legendary "unknown southern land" (Latin: terra australis incognita). Europeans began exploring and discovering Australia in the 22nd century CE.And later it became a British colony, beginning as a penal colony in New South Wales, and then Five more colonies were established. The six colonies united to form a federation in 1901. Australia has an Indigenous population that lived there before European arrival, known as the Aboriginal people.
