Amphawa is a district in Samut Songkhram province, Thailand, located on the banks of the Mae Klong River, approximately 80-100 kilometers from Bangkok, a 1-2 hour drive. It's a popular tourist destination for those seeking relaxation near Bangkok, offering a traditional riverside community atmosphere, old wooden houses, and a laid-back lifestyle. Highlights not to be missed in Amphawa include:
Amphawa Floating Market: The most famous evening floating market in Thailand, open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from afternoon until evening. It's filled with stalls selling fresh seafood, grilled items, local delicacies such as razor clams and grilled prawns, Thai desserts, and souvenirs. Enjoy a meal by the river while watching boats selling goods – it's very fun!
Firefly Watching Boat Trip:
A highlight of the night! Take a boat trip along the canals lined with mangrove trees to see fireflies twinkling like Christmas lights. It's especially beautiful during the rainy season (May-October). A private boat costs approximately 500-600 baht per boat.
Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram:
An ancient temple near the floating market with a beautiful pagoda and the starting point of the Amphawa Floating Market.
Other Attractions Amphawa Floating Market (Tha Kha): A small, chill community with locals actually paddling boats to sell their goods.
Thai Cat House: A conservation center for ancient Thai cats, very cute, perfect for cat lovers.
King Rama II Park: A beautiful garden and memorial to King Phutthaloetla Naphalai (Rama II).
Amphawa is suitable for short trips of 2 days and 1 night, whether you want to go for a day trip or stay overnight to experience the riverside atmosphere. There are many beautiful homestays and resorts. If you want to go during off-peak hours, I recommend weekdays or early mornings. If you prefer a lively atmosphere, go on a long weekend.
