Shopping in Sydney
Queen Victoria Building or QVB One of Sydney's most famous tourist and shopping destinations, this historic building is located in the heart of the CBD on George Street, spanning an entire city block between George, Market, York, and Druitt streets. A brief history: completed in 1898 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
Designed by architect George McRae in a opulent Victorian Romanesque Revival style, it boasts stained-glass domes, carved sandstone, Roman arches, and beautiful spiral staircases.
Originally a market and department store, it nearly underwent demolition between the 1950s and 1970s before undergoing major restoration in the 1980s and reopening in 1986.
It is now a registered cultural heritage site.
Inside, the five floors (including the basement) are filled with over 180 Australian and international brand-name shops, cafes, restaurants, and upscale high tea establishments (such as The Tea Room).
A highlight is the stunning central dome, especially beautiful during Christmas when a giant Christmas tree is displayed.
There are also antique wall clocks and a statue of Queen Victoria. And a sealed, secret letter from Queen Elizabeth II, to be opened in 2085.
QVB is not just a shopping mall, but a living architectural museum, perfect for taking photos, shopping, or just strolling around. It's conveniently located near Town Hall Station and places like the Sydney Tower and Darling Harbour.
