Wat Phra Kaew (Emerald Buddha Temple), officially known as Wat Phra Sri Rattanasadaram, is one of the most important temples in Thailand. Located within the Grand Palace complex in Bangkok, it serves as the royal palace temple, similar to Wat Phra Sri Sanphet in Ayutthaya. While no monks reside there, it is used for various royal ceremonies.
A brief history: It was built during the reign of King Rama I (Phra Phutthayotfa Chulalok) in 1782, coinciding with the founding of Bangkok.
It was intended to enshrine the Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Ratana Patimakor, or Emerald Buddha, a sacred Buddha image revered as the nation's protector, which was brought from Vientiane (Laos) in 1779.
The Emerald Buddha is carved entirely from green jade (nephrite), depicted in a meditative posture, and stands approximately 66 cm tall. It has robes that are changed according to the three seasons, a practice personally performed by the King.
Highlights of Wat Phra Kaew:
The main chapel houses the Emerald Buddha.
The cloister surrounding the temple features stunning murals depicting the Ramayana epic.
The golden pagoda, the pavilion, the giant statues from the Ramayana, and beautiful Thai architecture adorned with colorful glazed tiles are also highlights.
Wat Phra Kaew is open to the public along with the Grand Palace. Respectful attire (covering shoulders to knees) is recommended. It's a must-see attraction when visiting Thailand!
Opening Hours:
Open daily from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM (ticket sales until 3:30 PM. It's recommended to enter before 3:00 PM to allow sufficient time for viewing).
Closed only during special royal ceremonies or important events (such as merit-making ceremonies), which will be announced in advance on the official website: https://www.royalgrandpalace.th/th/schedules
